Report by Dr Arpan K Banerjee Chair ISHRAD
The 14th annual ISHRAD (International Society for the History of Radiology) symposium this year was organised and hosted by Prof Mats Geijer from Gothenburg and was held on October 11, 2025, in the Brigit Thilander room, Sahlgrenska Academy, a part of the Sahlgrenska teaching hospital complex of the University of Gothenburg. The Sahlgrenska hospital founded in 1872 is named after the Swedish merchant and philanthropist from the eighteenth century who made his fortune with the Swedish East India Company. Today the vast complex of hospitals and healthcare teaching facilities is the largest in Sweden and third largest in Europe.
The Hospital boasts a recent Nobel Laureate amongst its professors. The late Prof Arvid Carlson a pharmacology Professor at Gothenburg University shared the 2000 Nobel Prize in Medicine with Kandel and Greengard for his work on the neurotransmitter dopamine. An exhibition of his work is displayed in the foyer of the academy building. His discovery led to new treatments for Parkinson’s disease. Another important figure from this institution is Nils Kock the late famous colorectal surgeon who has a procedure (Kock’s pouch) named after him.

The day before the meeting some attendees had the chance to attend a tour of the Gothenburg Museum of medical history with interesting exhibits chronicling the development of medicine in Sweden. The tour guide was the director, Lisa Mouwitz.
The theme of the annual conference this year was a continuation on the theme of ‘Pioneers in radiology worldwide at the time of Rontgen’ with a continuation including pioneers from the interwar period. (The abstracts of this meeting can be found below this report.)
Following the AGM Dr Arpan K Banerjee Chair of ISHRAD delivered an opening address with Prof Mats Geijer. This year we are publishing the abstracts. Dr U Busch was unable to present but Chiara Walter, a collaborator from the German Rontgen Museum, performed very well as his representative.
Thanks should be given to Mats Geijer for organising an excellent meeting. Thanks also to Dr Tina Banerjee and Johanna Thomas for their help with sorting out the practical aspects of the catering.
